What Urban Reboot is
Urban Reboot is Now City’s allied nonprofit: an organization that enables sustainable, neighborhood-scale development through grants and advisory. It supports the movement around regenerative districts with capacity building, education, technical assistance, and targeted philanthropic funding for public goods: the work that makes good projects possible but that no pro forma pays for.
Urban Reboot is deliberately not a developer and not a marketing arm. Its value depends on independence: an independent board majority, a real conflict-of-interest policy, and arms-length agreements for anything touching Now City projects. Structure and the 501(c)(3) application run through exempt-organization counsel.
Urban Reboot Funds: the capital vehicle, on standby
Urban Reboot Funds is the capital side of the vision: mission-driven, catalytic capital for sustainable real estate, as explored in depth by the Columbia University capstone (May 2025). It remains a real ambition and a distinct vehicle, and it is on standby until we find the team to build and manage the fund(s): a seasoned impact fund manager and the operating bench the capstone itself says the model requires.
When that team exists, the capstone’s guidance stands: start with a clear theory of change and a focused niche; prefer a simple, philanthropic-first capital stack over complex blended structures; deploy flexibly at the project level; and use the capstone’s Sustainability Metrics + Cost-Benefit model to pick the upgrades that earn their keep. Until then, no fund is marketed, and no capital is solicited.
The Edgewater civic entity is a separate question
The Edgewater district needs a civic nonprofit: the commons steward and coalition table described in the district’s coalition strategy. That will be a new entity, or a partnership with an existing Salem institution, supported by Now City and/or Urban Reboot. Urban Reboot is a potential supporter, incubator, or partner of that entity; it is not automatically that entity. Keeping the two distinct protects both: the district entity gets Salem-rooted legitimacy, and Urban Reboot keeps a mandate wider than one district.
Current status and rebuild
- Nonprofit designation: 501(c)(3) determination not yet complete. Interim option if grants need to flow sooner: fiscal sponsorship.
- Leadership: Brianna Gonzalez is stepping away as Executive Director. The rebuild seeks a new ED (fractional acceptable at first) and a reconstructed board with an independent majority.
- Assets in hand: the Columbia capstone toolkit (Sustainability Metrics + CBA model, Fund Development Toolkit, Fund Creation Reference), the urbanreboot.org site (needs a refresh: contact links, Oregon presence, and mission language differentiated from Now City’s), and the brand.
- Near-term sequence: counsel review of structure → board slate → ED search → 501(c)(3) completion → site refresh → first grants/advisory program defined.
How it shows up in conversations
With partners like SEDCOR and Salem institutions, Urban Reboot is presented as what it is: the nonprofit side of the Now City ecosystem, in rebuild, whose charter and board we are actively shaping and whose fingerprints we invite. The funds are mentioned only as a future vehicle awaiting the right team.
